Why Single Use?
During the tattoo process, you’re probably going to need to use more ink than your gun can hold—meaning that you’ll need to refill. When you refill, you don’t want your tattoo machine anywhere near your bottles of ink. Why? Because it’s simply not sanitary. Your machine has already punctured flesh, and therefore you need to keep it away from any clean products. This is where the tattoo ink cap comes in—it allows you to refill your ink in small, pre-mixed quantities that you can trash after you’re completed with the tattoo. Let me amend that: not “can” trash, but “must” trash if you want to maintain a sanitary working environment (which you most definitely do).
Tattoo Ink Cap Features
The tattoo ink caps were built for ease of use by artists. They’re wide enough to allow artists to dip their pens in as needed, and shallow enough that they don’t have to root around in the cap before finding ink. Most ink caps are transparent to allow the artist to easily distinguish between colors—a must in large, multi-colored tattoo designs. They also come in a variety of sizes in order to help artists stay organized during the tattooing process. The last thing an artist wants is to run out of pre-mixed ink because his ink cap couldn’t hold all that he needed.
Multi-Hole Ink Caps
Some retailers sell ink caps with more than one hole. This allows artists to keep all their ink colors on one palette (so to speak), adding to the convenience of the process. In addition to making is simpler for the artist to keep track of his colors, it also makes it less likely that the artist will knock over or spill a bunch of ink caps sitting on his table or workbench.
Tips for buying:
• You’re going to run through a lot of these—as in, a ton of them. Therefore, you want to buy as many of them as possible in one go: not only will you save money by ordering in bulk, but you’ll also cut down on shipping costs.
• Look for clear or white ink caps and stay away from colored ones. You don’t want to make any mistakes when tattooing, least of all something as silly as dipping your pen in the wrong inkwell and making the lady in a portrait’s blue eyes green.
