Vintage Tattoos: The Book of Old-School Skin Art, by Carol Clerk. This book features some sweet classic tattoos, and discusses great tattoo artists from the last 200 years as well. Whether you’re interested in getting inspired by some killer vintage tattoos or just want to know more about the history of Western tattoos, this a great book for you.
The Mammoth Book of Tattoos, Lal Hardy. This is a staggering East-meets-West collection of tattoo art, curated by Lal Hardy, the owner of New Wave Tattoo in London. There are a number of full-page photographs here, meaning that you can really sink into the details of the tattoos; the only downside is that it means that the book passes by in a flash. There are also a handful of Miami and LA Ink artists featured, so if you hate the show, then you this might not be the book for you.
Bushido: Legacies of the Japanese Tattoo, by Takahiro Kitamura. This is an in-depth look at the art of Japanese tattooing, in particular the work of the author’s well-known mentor, Horiyoshi III. Kitamura goes far beyond Horiyoshi III’s work, however, looking at the historical relationships between tattoo artist and apprentice, and tattoo artist and client in Japanese culture. This is a unique look at a master of Japanese tattoos, and a must for any tattoo artist interested in that style.
The Tattoo History Source Book, Steve Gilbert. This academic, anthropological look at the history of tattoo art is fascinating, as Gilbert goes beyond the commonly looked at 200 year history of Western art, and even beyond the 1,500 year history of Eastern art to explore the relationship to tattooing of Greeks and Romans. He relies on first-hand material when possible, reprinting excerpts from a variety of sources. While the work is academic, the tone is accessible, and contains some unique illustrations that may well inspire you to travel back in history for your next tattoo design.
The Art of the Tattoo, Henry Ferguson and Lynn Proctor. This art book features over 250 commissioned and archival photographs of tattoos inked by dozens of the world’s best tattoo artists. It covers a wide range of styles and artists, and includes a comprehensive history of tattoo art.
Secrets of Tattooing, by Erick Alayon. This is more of a how-to guide, and while it’s limited by its form (you’ll never learn how to tattoo from reading a book), it could be helpful when paired with an apprenticeship. It’s a bit more in-depth than his other books, The Craft of Tattooing, and The Art and Science of Modern Tattooing, which are both helpful reference books for most tattoo artists.
